Dahlia DeWinters, Writer

What kind of writing do you do?

I started out in 2011 as a romance writer, but since then have branched into historical fiction, horror, and general fiction. However, I’m still a romance writer at heart.  Most of my stories, no matter the overall genre, have romantic elements.

Who are your favorite authors/writers?

Surprise!  They’re not all romance authors.  Some of my favorites are James Cain, Ed McBain, Robert B. Parker and early (emphasis on early) Stephen King. I also enjoy reading Lisa Kleypas and sometimes re-read some Danielle Steel or Jackie Collins.

What writing projects are you currently working on?

Right now, I’m working on starting a paranormal fiction series, rather like Danielle Steel (romantic drama) meets Charlaine Harris (paranormal), but light on the mystery.  I also plan on writing horror shorts in the same universe.

What challenges do you overcome on a regular basis so that you can write?

Given the issues we’re dealing with right now, I have three high-schoolers at home, attending classes virtually. Of course, they like to pop in on me to make sure I’m “okay”, as well as take a break from their classes.  I’ve learned to deal with the interruptions. Writing in short bursts helps, as well as planning what I’m going to write ahead of time.

Additionally, I had to get over my perfectionist tendencies and just write.  First drafts, even second drafts, are always a mess.

What would you say to someone who wants to write, but is hesitant?

Stop overthinking and get words on the page.

What impact do you hope your writing makes on the world?

I write to entertain.  If one person gets a kick out of my writing, then my job is done.

Where can readers find your work?

I’m on Amazon as Dahlia DeWinters as well as Barnes and Noble and other ebook retailers.
